Executive Staff

Lauren Buckler is an accredited professional in energy and environmental design (LEED AP), a certified energy manager (CEM) and a licensed mechanical engineer (PE). Since joining DGS, she advanced from Director of Energy, to Director of Energy & Engineering, to her current role with the agency as Assistant Secretary of Design, Construction & Energy. Prior to joining State government, Assistant Secretary Buckler managed energy and sustainability initiatives, both internal and external, for a Maryland-based consulting firm.

In her work at DGS, Ms. Buckler leads staff across several units, all focused on different aspects of the design, construction and energy use of state-funded facilities. During any given year, she is responsible for 100+ active state agency construction projects valued at over $150 million and is overseeing several dozen projects in the planning or design stages.  Included in the Design & Construction is the technical support for all state-funded K-12 and community college technical design reviews. Additionally, she oversees the energy & sustainability unit which procures the States $100M+ annual utility portfolio, supports the States green purchasing initiatives and generates projects to reduce the States energy consumption. 

Ms. Buckler began her career in the construction industry as a project engineer on a LEED facility. From there, she moved to the design industry where she produced energy models, conducted feasibility studies, designed mechanical systems and managed projects for a variety of facility types.  

She earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and a Masters in Project Management from George Washington University in Washington D.C.

Ms. Buckler’s commitment to the engineering profession extends beyond the office. She regularly volunteers with organizations focused on expanding opportunities for young people and women in the engineering profession.​
