Maryland Green Purchasing

History and Mission of the GPC

Established by the Green Maryland Act of 2010, the Maryland Green Purchasing Committee (GPC) administers an environmentally preferable purchasing program for the state.

The goal of the GPC is to foster the health of our communities and environment by promoting sustainable procurement practices in government.

Benefits of green purchasing include:
  • Clean air, water, and soil
  • Healthy communities
  • Stable ecosystems
  • A reduced carbon footprint

In this line, we develop and execute statewide green purchasing policies, guidelines, programs, best practices, regulations, and conduct trainings to raise general awareness for these important issues.

Our work also supports Maryland’s established targets for Greenhouse Gas Reductions (Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act of 2016) and energy efficiency (Executive Order 01.01.2019.08 Energy Savings Goals for State Government).

The GPC consists of the following Statutory Members:
  • General Services (Chair)
  • Budget and Management
  • Environment
  • Health
  • Information Technology
  • Natural Resources
  • Public Safety and Correctional Services
  • State Treasurer
